Still here. Sorry I’ve been away.

Yes. I’m still here. I’ve been busy and when that happens certain things suffer as a result…like updates to my blog, progress on A Doodle Book and more A Doodle Cards. I will be posting a few updates in the next week or two. Such as:

  • A Doodle Book progress > Preview: Sadly, I won’t finish the book by December 31st, 2011. I will however upload pics as I have made a dent. It looks like my new target will be next December. Sad but true.
  • The 12 Doodles of Christmas > A short little doodle project to get some more content on this site. Nothing like a challenge to get me back on track. More to come on this front and watch the blog and Twitter starting December 25th.

More to come soon. Cheers.

The Evolution of the Desk Lamp

Doodles for May 26th, 2011

Doodle for May 26th, 2011
Location: Owen Sound, ON
Source: Crisp, 8.5×11 Paper

OK , so these are not my doodles. Today I am featuring the work of my kids. I was away yesterday for the day (I usually work from home) and I came home late. When I walked in I was greeted by both my kids, Jackson who is 7 and Lily who is 4. They both handed me cards with drawings in them. These kids rock (yes, I’m biased – but seriously – check out their work below)! How could you not be a proud parent with work like this. Anyways – that’s it.

Cheers,

Chris
@ADoodleBlog

“Harry Potter”
Jackson loves Harry Potter. This fine doodle shows Dumbledore, the Sword of Gryffindor and Dumbledore’s Elder wand.

“Skateboard Park”
The kids loves his skateboard and our local skateboard park.

“Letters and stuff”
Lily is working on her letters and of course, being her father’s daughter, she likes to throw in random stuff as well.

“Long Skateboard”
Lily loves her brother and since he loves skateboards she loves skateboards.

A Doodle Book: Still at it

2011 Project: A Doodle Book

Yes. I am still at it. I’m down to about 7 months left and I’m not in 30% through the book – yikes! Oh well, summer is here which means taking breaks by the lake and, what else, doodling. I’m still confident I’ll complete it in time. The current page I’m working on is below but check out the recent work on my project page which you can see here.

Cheers,

1 Year Twitter Anniversary > A Doodle for @elinbach

Recently I celebrated my 1 year anniversary on Twitter. I am still working on a post to discuss my positive (and at times confusing, frustrating and dare I say exhilarating) experiences with twitter so I’ll save that for another day.  I decided one morning leading up to that date that I was going to offer up a custom framed doodle to a twitter follower. And without a second thought I tweeted the following:

In a very short time I had a response from the delightful Elin Angharad (@elinbach):

With a very talented winner selected I went off and made a (in my opinion) a pretty spectacular doodle. I even bought a nice frame for it while on a recent trip to Seattle. The finished product looked great. And finally after many delays (business travel, minor home renovation, pure laziness) the doodle is now en route to Elin by Canada Post and should be there soon.

Here is a photo of the final piece. Sadly I forgot to take a photo of the finished framed piece since I was in a rush to mail it to Elin but here is a scan of the doodle. I hope Elin likes it because I certainly enjoyed making it.

A Doodle Book: Progress Update

2011 Project: A Doodle Book

Progress on A Doodle Book is slow but steady. I have a lot to accomplish in the 8 remaining months of the year. I continue to evolve my style and its amazing how evident it is as you move page to page through the book. The heavy lines you find on the cover/spine/back as well as the inside cover are giving way to slimmer and more crisp lifework. I like the change. I look at the cover and, quite honestly, it’s a mess. The thick lines make it hard to maneuver inside the doodle for what lies within. The finer line work allows the eye the freedom to roam.

A lot of people ask me where do I start and do I have an idea in mind when I start. The honest answer is No. I  start wherever I want to start and I doodle in real-time. without an agenda, idea or plan. I just go to it. There is no right or wrong here folks. Remember, it’s just a doodle. It’s no different than the doodles that lined my school notebooks and that still line my workbooks. I discover it as I draw it.

I hope you enjoy the latest update (below). It’s still not complete but it’s getting there. For more, check out the project update page here.

Cheers,

Chris

A Doodle Card from @xmagpie

Card: ADC_2010-002
Recipient: @xmagpie
Location: Tempe, AZ

Ladies and gentleman, feast your eyes on the A Doodle Card reply from the wonderful Ellie N/A (@xmagpie). Stop reading now and look below and then come back (I’ll wait). Now, I hope you’re smiling. Elli’s card is a little dark, sure, but fun! I love it. Simple, fun, and everything a doodle should be. This card is now on display in my humble studio and I shall smile each and every time I check it out. I hope you enjoy.

It’s interesting to see the contrast between @xmagpie and @turnislefthome’s work. Two talented doodlers (oh alright, artists) with very different styles but unquestionable talent. I’m very thankful they decided to contribute to this little (maybe not forever) doodle card project. More to come soon. Keep watching.

Here is the reply from the talented Tim Reynolds (@turnislefthome). Absolutely solid work. Tim even had a go with the envelope as well. What a great start to the A Doodle Card project. Tim has set the bar high.

A Doodle…Card?

The other day I picked up a blank gift card – which I happen to have since my wife and I just started making cards for her business (Plug: http://www.mocobabies.com). Anyways I picked up a card and started doodling like normal. At the time I had no agenda I was just doodling (which you can see from this blog I do from time to time). Later that night I couldn’t sleep. It was late (1AM or so) and I decided to give the card away. I had thought about giving it away earlier but I wasn’t actually sure why but at that late (or early) hour it all came to me.

So I tweeted.

When I woke up that morning I saw that no one tweeted a reply so I tweeted again (a little desperate, I know). Not too long after that someone tweeted a reply.

Now of course Tim wasn’t too late. People don’t generally respond to my contests/giveaways. It’s OK. I’ve got thick skin and I realize in a sea of tweets mine could get lost. So, no, Tim wasn’t late. In all honesty I had a pretty good idea it would be Tim who replied. He is a fellow doodler and we are frequently tweeting about this and that so I was not surprised that he responded and ‘won’ the card. The rest of you lost out though (it’s a damn fine doodle card).

When I posted the tweet about the contest there was in fact more to it than just: here’s a card, who wants it. But 140 characters was not enough room to include all the details. So, there is more to it and both he and the readers of this blog post will have to wait for the details. Tim needs to find out first and he will when he gets the card, which will be mailed out tomorrow (Monday, December 13th, 2010). With any luck Canada Post and the United States Postal Service will find a way to get it in Tim’s hands this week. Once in Tim’s hands (assuming he tells me he has received it) the rest of details will come out.

Oh, just in case you were interested in seeing a sneak peak of the card, here you go. Don’t you feel stupid now for not attempting to enter the contest? It’s OK. No apologies necessary.
